Every computer or phone uses an operating system to perform commands and tasks. Examples of an operating system would be Windows or macOS to run computers or phones.
For those who do not know, there is another operating system called Linux. Unlike Windows and macOS, there are many distributions of Linux, such as Ubuntu, Redhat, Debian, Fedora and many more.
For further clarification, the word distribution is not a version. Ubuntu, Redhat, Debian and Fedora are all similar but not the same operating system, therefore they are distributions of the Linux operating system. Just like Windows and macOS, each of these operating systems does have version and software updates.
Below is the Ubuntu layout where you can store and save files or folders in different directories.
I downloaded the Ubuntu operating system and wanted to share some of the reasons why I recommend it to others:
Free — If you have any doubts about installing a new operating system, as stated on their website, the Ubuntu distribution is free to download.
Open-Source — People have the option to view Ubuntu’s source code and if they want to contribute to it as well if they want to improve the operating system’s functionality.
Customizable — After installing Ubuntu, it does not come with many installed programs, therefore you can open up the installed program called “Terminal” and type code to download any programs of your choice.
The “Terminal” program:
Programming — It’s true that you must open up the “Terminal” program and type code to download programs. It may be intimidating for those who never coded before, but after using the terminal many times, you will become used to using it and appreciate coding more.
Speed — After many days of using Ubuntu, I noticed starting up this operating system, opening programs, navigating through the web, and conducting programming in different IDES was much faster as well.
